Our Approach
School incursions and innovation programs built for the skills that matter most right now.
As AI and automation reshape what education needs to do, schools are searching for programs that build the capabilities that remain distinctly human – critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, student agency, communication and problem solving. illuminate has been building exactly those capabilities, in schools across Australia, since 2011.
Our programs are used by schools looking for curriculum-aligned design thinking incursions, enterprise education programs, student leadership workshops, innovation programs for primary and high school students, and capability-building experiences for regional and remote communities. Most are delivered face-to-face on site. illuminateX is our flexible, teacher-led option for classrooms and home school settings where an incursion is not possible.
The difference between each program is time, depth and context – not quality, not commitment, and not the capabilities we are there to build. illuminate shows up the same way every time.

What every program builds
The capabilities schools, employers and communities are asking for – right now, not eventually.
illuminate’s skills framework was developed through consultation with industry partners and a review of current literature. It describes the capabilities young people need to be confident, creative and capable – relevant to school, to community, to industry and to life. It has been developed through consultation with industry partners, educational research, and alignment to the Australian Curriculum. As AI reshapes the workplace, these are the skills no algorithm replaces.
We are focused on building skills like…

WEEK LONG PROGRAM ADAPTION | YEARS 7 – 12
STEAM Challenge
Design it. Get it approved. Run it.
Our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) program builds on the illuminate Challenge framework, bringing our problem solving workshop that allows students to explore this space in an authentic fashion.
A two-phase school incursion where student teams identify a problem within a scoped industry area, design an experiment to investigate it, seek approval from an industry panel, then run it. Teams present real findings – not just proposals. illuminate sets the industry scope. The direction is entirely the students’.
Students produce: a functioning prototype developed throughout the challenge alongside a problem frame and solution, financial forecasts, a business case, marketing materials and a pitch presentation to real stakeholders.
WEEK LONG PROGRAM ADAPTION | YEARS 7 -12
Agribusiness Challenge
Real land. Real science. Real decisions.
Co-designed and facilitated with agribusiness experts, this adaption of our illuminate Challenge takes the week long experience, and allows for it to also explore concepts around land use, cultivation, climate, science and more.
The adaptation is focused on agricultural land use, where students conduct soil tests, analyse climate data and assess what a real block of land could viably support – developing and defending a land use proposal to an industry panel, who act as mentors and judges to support the student learning journey too. Solutions are economically viable, environmentally considered and shaped by the land and people students are working with. Particularly well-suited to regional and rural schools.
