Hume City Council, Vic
Presented in association with the Hume City Council, Hume Multiversity, and added the Hume Whittlesea LLEN & Hume Tech School in later years.
Since 2017, the illuminate Challenge has been a dynamic collaboration with Hume City Council in Victoria, bringing students from all high schools in the region together to tackle real-world challenges alongside the council’s economic development department.
Themes are carefully crafted to address pressing issues – from co-designing adult learning opportunities to reigniting tourism in post-COVID Melbourne, fostering sustainable communities and promoting digital inclusivity. The insights gathered during these sessions directly influence regional economic development strategies. There is now a queue of stakeholders from across the region who are eager to collaborate with Hume City Council and illuminate to bring student thinking to bear on their own challenges.
The program has also fostered a vibrant culture within schools. Past students return to assist their peers – drawn by the dynamic learning environment and the tangible impact of the program that they want to see their peers benefit from too.
The partnership with the Multiversity has added another dimension: faculty from the stakeholders in education from a range of organisations participate as mentors and judges, connecting students directly to higher education and professional industry in a way that goes well beyond a campus visit.
