illuminate:nextgen Challenge (High Schools)

The illuminate Challenge is the flagship program of illuminate Education Australia, providing high school students with an authentic learning environment for them to activate the confidence, creativity and capability to reach their full potential through solving problems in their community.

Across the week, students are introduced to the innovative process designed by illuminate Education Australia and supported by experienced facilitators with input from the community and our partners, growing in their skills and confidence within themselves and of their peers throughout the journey. Teams begin by growing in their understanding of a relevant issue in their community and build their knowledge base to define the problem they see, creatively explore and refine possible solutions, develop business models for sustained impact as well as marketing materials that connect with target customers, present the idea for investment and support, showcase how their team will work collaboratively to deliver the solution and a prototype of their solution. All of the skills and resources required to complete these stages are introduced by illuminate Education Australia facilitators in the week, both to complete the challenge and as  transferable, life skills including:

What Does A CHALLENGE Look Like?

With so many elements built into the illuminate Challenge, it can be hard to put it all into words.

To help with that, our partners at Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand produced this video in association with the University of Newcastle’s Ourimbah Campus, where over 150 students from 12 different schools came up with new ideas in agribusiness and connecting consumers to local produce in 2017. You will see key sessions throughout the challenge and journey with teams and their teachers as they grew in their confidence, creativity and capability with the challenge

WHAT TYPES OF CHALLENGES ARE OFFERED?

From 2022, our programs are offered using the following four key themes:

Enterprise

Designed for schools and students who have a level of experience with business related activities or a focused interested in entrepreneurial programs.  Students will be presented with the framework to identify and research an issue based on a set challenge topic, and work in teams to identify, refine and pitch a new business idea to solve that issue.

Community

Designed for schools and students who have an interest in social enterprise.  The students will be shown how a business-based framework is applied to effectively identify, research and develop initiatives within not-for-profit initiatives at a community level. Students will work in teams to identify, refine and pitch a new initiative to improve the outcomes for the users of services.

Agribusiness

Designed with input from experienced people in the field for schools and students who have a level of experience with agricultural, horticultural or viticultural initiatives. The students will be shown how the innovation framework is applied to effectively identify, research and develop initiatives within the agricultural sector. Students will work in teams and been taken through the basics of selling and promoting their produce to customers or suppliers but will begin by students examining a block of land to consider the ideal use of that property to create produce that is of value and sustainable for the long term.

Skills

Designed for schools and students who have less experience with, or opportunity to put into practice, the skills that are used in all businesses. The students are introduced to key skills and then supported in practising these while working in teams to identify, refine and pitch a new initiative of their choosing, based on a chosen theme

HOW ARE THE CHALLENGES DELIVERED?

In-School

Delivered by illuminate Education Australia facilitators who come into the school, along with industry guests at a time that suits the school, the challenge runs within the normal school day for a 4 or 5 day program.

The challenge is designed to have around 140 students, ideally a whole year group, complete the program together and provides the opportunity to integrate the benefits of the program into the school curriculum through the topic covered and skills developed over the week

Digital/Hybrid

To accommodate COVID-19 restrictions, the program can be delivered in a fully digital version, or combination of in-school and digital delivery (which limits the number of facilitators and guests who need to attend the school in person).

Should students be unable to attend school, they can complete the program from their own home, or in small groups within the school, complying with any capacity requirements that are imposed.

One Day Workshops

We understand accomodating a 5-day week is difficult, however we don’t want that to hold any student back from experiencing an illuminate Challenge. The one-day workshop is a taste of the full five-day challenge, introducing students to the process of problem framing and ideating where students present their solution idea to a community problem at the end of the day.

WE DON’T HAVE THE STUDENT NUMBERS OR BUDGET FOR A SCHOOL-BASED CHALLENGE. CAN WE STILL PARTICIPATE?

illuminate Education Australia offers programs for small groups of students from different schools to complete the challenge to increase the number of students who can benefit from the challenge.  With the generous support of our partners, we offer programs, without registration costs, for schools aligned to regions of Australia (Western, Central and Eastern). Schools may choose to travel to a central location to work face to face with students from other schools or participate digitally from their own school.
